Christmas is just around the corner and many of you have helped the Society get into the festive spirit by coming along to our annual Carols by candlelight services.
Songs and smiles lit up December nights around the UK, all while raising awareness for dementia. Singing for the Brain groups put on their best Christmas jumpers and joined some incredible choirs to perform classic carols and songs. Guests weren’t afraid to join in the festive fun either – you ate an impressive 230 mince pies at the London service alone!
Raising dementia awareness
Guests were also inspired by speakers, including Don Day at the Hertford service. Don is a million pound legacy giver who lost his wife to dementia in March and is now a volunteer for the Research Network.
Talking about the importance of dementia awareness and Alzheimer’s Society, he said:
‘Whilst I believe the importance of the Society providing research and campaigning, just as relevant is the support provided through guidance and advice to the carer. Over 8 years ago my wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and it was then I first became aware of the Society. My wife appeared to retreat into a world of her own which seemed to be a contented environment, as a carer I had to watch her disappear and where the information and guidance provided me a greater understanding and eased the situation at the time. I have recently become a Research Network Volunteer and hope that I can help in some way to give back to the Society.’
Live from Southwark Cathedral
Were you one of the whopping 37.9k people who tuned into our Facebook Live channel to watch the London service as it was happening in Southwark Cathedral? If so, we hope you sat comfortably on your sofa with a mince pie in hand and mulled wine warming on the stove. It was overwhelming to have so many of you show your support by digitally joining us. You can still catch up by watching the video here – a perfect watch while you do that last minute wrapping.
Did you make it along to one of the services? We want to say a huge thank you for being part of these extremely enjoyable evenings. You might be able to spot yourself in our selection of photos, so take a peek here and share with family and friends.
