Our social media community guidelines

We want to encourage an active social media community by ensuring they are safe and welcoming spaces for everyone.

How we use social media

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We use social media to help us raise awareness of dementia, provide support and advice, campaign to amplify the voices of everyone living with dementia to make dementia the priority it should be and raise funds for dementia research.

It’s important that our social media platforms are safe and welcoming spaces for everyone. It’s one of the most effective tools we have to engage with our supporters through sharing incredible stories, advice, fundraising efforts, and achievements in research.

Community guidelines

Our pages are monitored daily, with reduced hours on weekends and bank holidays, and we try to ensure that all issues are dealt with in a timely manner.

To ensure our social media is a safe space for everyone with a connection to, or an interest in dementia, we ask you to adhere to our guidelines.

We encourage you to:

  • Use the community to give and get support, help to raise awareness and funds to help end the devastation caused by dementia.
  • Be kind and respectful of others, their stories, and opinions.

We do not allow:

  • Racist, homophobic, xenophobic, abusive, or violent language that is aimed at others.
  • Hate speech, bullying, or harassment of others.
  • Adverts for commercial products or services, specifically aimed at people with dementia, including care homes.
  • Any spam, whether it’s related or unrelated to our page and its content
  • Anything that could be libellous including critical statements or accusations that have no factual basis or are defamatory.
  • Personal details such as addresses or phone numbers, whether it’s your own or others.

Actions we will take to enforce these guidelines

We moderate messages and comments and will hide or remove any content that does not follow these guidelines at our own discretion.

Where possible we will message a user directly if they have violated these community guidelines to provide a warning.

If a user continues to share unacceptable posts or comments, we will block them from engaging with our future content to ensure our pages remain safe and welcoming.

Protecting our people

We do not tolerate bullying and harassment of any kind; this includes aggressive messages and abusive language. This applies not only to interactions between users across our social media spaces, but to individuals who can be identified as working for or with Alzheimer’s Society via details on personal social media accounts.

If we become aware of any instances of our staff and volunteers being subject to harassment or bullying of any kind on social media, we will enforce the guidelines above where possible. If required, we will advise and support our people to block users and accounts that continually target or spam personal accounts and/or use threatening or abusive language.

Additional considerations when using our social media spaces

The general community guidelines for each site should also be considered as content may be removed directly by the social media platforms.
